Gender is more complex than most of us have been taught. Gender is made up of three parts: (1) gender biology (our bodies or biological sex – our sex assigned at birth based on appearance of genitals), (2) gender expression (how we dress and act), and (3) gender identity (how we feel inside). For most kids, these three facets of gender line up and the kids are typically gendered boys or girls (cisgender). We are a group of moms who have come together because we have a transgender child. We live all across the United States, Canada, and now Australia. Our children are different ages and at different stages along their journeys. Some are just beginning to transition, some are living authentically as adults already. We come from different backgrounds and none of us have actually met (yet). What we have in common is an unconditional LOVE for our children. We are allies to the transgender community.

Sharing your journey builds connections that create community. Some of us feel that we can’t tell our story because we will be judged, shunned, shamed or bullied. Others know that talking about who we are strengthens our resolve, builds self-esteem and boosts confidence. When you open up to others relationships are borne out of common experiences and shared values. It is refreshing and energizing to know that you are not alone. Give blogging a try. Putting the words on paper gives voice to your identity. It validates who you are. It’s like a weight was just lifted that you didn’t even realize was present. If you don't feel ready, speak with others who have shared their story…that can help.

If you know someone who is transgender, here are some tips: Use correct pronouns. He, she, they, them, and xe are some that are widely used. If you aren’t sure of their preference, ASK!! It may sound weird saying in your head “so what pronouns do you prefer?” but it isn’t weird. No one will be offended. Refrain from using derogatory terms like tranny, he/she, she-male, “a trans”, it, fake, etc. The phrase “a transgender” is incorrect grammar. Transgender individuals are people. The word transgender is an adjective not a noun. Another important factor is the person’s name--the transgender individual’s chosen name is their name no matter what it says on their birth certificate.
