Over the past year, the Trevor Project reported that 1 in every 5 trans and nonbinary young person attempted suicide over the past year, twice the rate that of their cisgender peers. Not only does the population face high mental health risks, they also face barriers to access mental health services with 3 in every 5 reporting that, although they wanted services, they couldn’t receive care. Moreover, the study highlighted that 54% of young LGBTQ individuals experienced symptoms of depression, while 41% seriously contemplated suicide. Alarmingly, only 56% of LGBTQ young people who expressed a need for mental health care were able to access it.

In recent months, several states across the United States have introduced and signed legislation imposing restrictions on gender-affirming care for transgender and non-binary individuals. While an Ohio court has issued a temporary restraining order against the ban, other states like Wyoming have signed into law a ban on essential healthcare for trans youth.
Restrictions on therapy have been known to increase feelings of dysphoria, depression, and anxiety among transgender youth, potentially leading to long-term negative consequences including suicide. Therapy has been shown to improve mental health outcomes and quality of life for transgender youth, making access to such sessions critical for their well-being.
Stand with Trans, as a 501c3 nonprofit whose mission is to empower and support transgender youth and their loved ones, understands the importance of providing support mechanisms that will remove barriers, increase access, and lower the incidences of poor mental health. As such, the Stand with Trans Therapy Assistance Program (TAP) is in place to combat the disastrous outcomes of restrictive legislation and the increasing need for care. The program provides free therapy sessions for those who qualify, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder access to essential mental health support. This interim solution can mean the difference between life or death among the vulnerable population.
Benefits of TAP
Financial Accessibility: TAP covers session fees directly to the mental health provider for individuals indicating an inability to pay. This financial assistance ensures that cost is not a barrier to accessing therapy.
Supports Transgender Youth: TAP specifically serves transgender and non-binary youth aged 13-24, offering support during a crucial period of identity development. By addressing mental health needs early on, TAP helps youth build resilience and navigate their gender journey with confidence.
Access to Qualified Providers: TAP connects individuals with trained and vetted mental health providers who specialize in trans-affirming therapy. These providers offer compassionate and affirming care, creating a safe and supportive environment for clients.
Enhanced Mental Health and Well-being: By providing access to gender-affirming therapy, TAP promotes improved mental health outcomes and overall well-being for transgender and non-binary individuals. Therapy helps individuals manage stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns.
Increased Resilience: Therapy helps individuals build resilience and adaptability, enabling them to navigate life’s challenges more effectively. Clients learn to bounce back from setbacks, overcome obstacles, and build a sense of empowerment.
