The Coming Out Process and Considerations

Coming Out To Friends

When you’re coming out to friends, there can be a lot of fear around “what if they don’t like me anymore” or “what if they tell everyone”–the odds are likely that if the other person was a good friend before you told them, they will probably still be a good friend afterwards. As a general rule of thumb, you can typically assume that your friends will continue to love and support you, but you should always be ready for the possibility that they may tell more people before you’re ready, or they may not know how to be supportive yet.

Don’t be afraid to discuss your needs with your friends–it’s okay to discuss boundaries about things like when you do/don’t want them to use your name and pronouns, what questions make you uncomfortable, and what you need from them in order to feel supported in the friendship.
